What Is License Plate Renewal in Alabama?

Plate renewal in Alabama replaces the registration receipt and year decal attached to the existing plate. The plate number stays the same, and the physical plate itself is not swapped out at renewal. Alabama runs a one-year, staggered renewal cycle keyed to the first letter of the owner’s last name, per Alabama Code § 32-6-61.

  • Each owner’s renewal month falls between January and November. Leased, commercial, and fleet vehicles renew in October or November.
  • Renewal applies only to an already-titled vehicle. A title transfer after a sale or purchase is a separate transaction at the county licensing office; it does not happen during a standard renewal.
  • Passenger cars, pickup trucks, motorcycles, trailers, motor homes, and battery-electric vehicles all renew on the same annual cycle. No vehicle class follows a biennial schedule.

When Do You Need To Renew Your Alabama License Plate?

Registration expires on the last day of the assigned renewal month. Alabama does not permit early renewal; the window opens on the first day of the renewal month and closes at midnight on the last day, per the ALTagRenewals FAQ.

  • No early window. Renewal cannot be submitted before the first day of the designated month.
  • Many counties mail a courtesy reminder at the start of the renewal month, but not all do. Failure to receive a notice does not waive penalties, per Alabama Admin. Code r. 810-5-1-.211.
  • Alabama grants no grace period for annual renewals. The $15 late penalty under Code of Alabama § 32-6-65 attaches on the first day after the renewal month ends, plus interest computed under § 40-1-44.
  • No safety inspection or emissions test gates the renewal transaction. Alabama does not require either for registration purposes, per the Alabama Department of Revenue.

How To Renew Your License Plate in Alabama

Before choosing a channel, confirm that your liability insurance is active. The county licensing official will verify coverage through the Online Insurance Verification System (OIVS) at the point of renewal. A valid Alabama driver license number for each owner on the title is also required.

  • County licensing offices handle all Alabama tag renewals. Find your office through the ALDOR Vehicle Licensing Offices directory. Bring the renewal notice (or your tag number), proof of insurance, and payment. Offices accept credit and debit cards, cash, and checks.
  • Mail-in renewal: sign the courtesy notice, write in your insurance NAIC number and policy number, enclose a legible copy of each owner’s driver license, and mail the packet with a check payable to the county licensing official. Jefferson County, for example, requires mail orders by the 25th of the renewal month. A $2 mail fee per plate or decal applies.
  • Online renewal is covered in the fees and online sections below. The portal asks for your tag number, webcode or PIN from the mailed notice, and driver license details before processing payment.

Late renewals cannot be processed by mail; the owner must visit the county office.

How Much Is License Plate Renewal in Alabama?

The base registration fee is the smallest piece of the renewal bill. Ad valorem tax, which varies by county millage rate and vehicle market value, moves the total well past what most owners expect from the state fee alone.

  • Passenger cars pay a $23 base registration fee. Pickup trucks range from $23 to $105, scaled by weight. Motorcycles renew at $15, and travel or utility trailers at $12, per the ALDOR Motor Vehicle Registration Fees schedule.
  • Battery-electric vehicles carry a $203 annual registration fee; plug-in hybrids, $103. Both took effect July 1, 2023.
  • Ad valorem tax is calculated as market value times the assessment ratio (15% for Class IV private passenger vehicles) times the local millage rate. County millage rates vary widely, from roughly 20 mills to over 70 mills depending on municipality, per the ALDOR Vehicle Valuation page.
  • A $1.25 issuance fee sits on every renewal. Counties may add local issuance fees on top of the state figure.
  • The late penalty referenced in the timing section costs $15 flat under § 32-6-65, plus interest accruing under § 40-1-44.
  • Specialty plates stack an annual additional fee onto the base renewal, typically $50 for organizational plates. Personalized plates carry the same annual add-on as the underlying plate type, per the ALDOR License Plates catalog.

Can I renew my license plate online in Alabama?

Most Alabama counties offer online tag renewal through ALTagRenewals, a state-authorized portal that partners with local county licensing offices. The portal covers standard renewals only; first-time registrations, title transfers, and plate-type changes must happen in person. Renewals are accepted only during the assigned renewal month, and Alabama currently allows one-year renewals exclusively.

The portal requires your tag number, the webcode or PIN printed on your mailed courtesy notice, your Alabama driver license number and expiration date, and a credit card, debit card, or electronic check. A convenience fee (typically 2.5% to 3% plus $0.30) goes to the payment provider, plus a $2 to $3 mail fee for shipping the decal and receipt. Decals arrive within 5 to 7 business days after payment clears.

County-specific portals also exist. Jefferson County runs JEFFCOnline Express Lane, accepting Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover with no county service fee. When the portal cannot process a renewal (expired more than one year, address mismatch, or specialty plate requiring documentation), visit your county licensing office in person.

If Alabama can renew your plate online, that path saves a trip and runs around the clock; the county office handles everything the portal refuses.
